In general term a Smart City is a city which is build around judicious and abundant use of technologies , creating a better balanced infrastructure. However a city is not smart until the human capital inside the city develops accordingly. Therefore a city can be called smart only if both social and technical aspects are given equal importance.

With the rise of technologies the idea of smart cities came into play. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) allows people and government to communicate with each other where people give government what they need in the city and other necessary things which government listens and plan accordingly to build new smart cities providing smart solutions. Internet Of Things (IOT) is one such technology that plays a vital role in smart cities. IOT uses everyday things and make them smart by adding necessary IC chips and connecting them to internet to provide smart solutions to everyday problems. With the combination of sensors and IOT devices smart cities provide smarter approach to problems.

For example, with the help of GPS and embedded devices along roads, smart parkings are made, instantly providing nearby open parking spaces. This really is a smart solution to the parking problem. IOT allows smart cities to have smart streetlights which automatically dim, brighten, switch on or off the lights based on the outer conditions. IOT based smart city technology offer real-time monitoring and analytics, combining data from sensors and CCTV cameras that are set up within the city which monitors social media feed and predict possible crime allowing to reduce the rate of crimes.

Features of Smart City

As fascinating as these smart solutions look, for its success, implementation of two things in smart city should be given most importance, Data and Security. For a city to entirely function on technologies that uses tons of data, faster connectivity and data backup is important. Necessary backups should be there to prevent data loss and additional connections should be laid  to provide a fast data transmission. Since smart cities collect data and use them accordingly to provide smart solutions, special emphasis should be laid on data piracy and protection because data must never be misused to exploit any individual.

In a smart city, implementation of social sustainability is a must. Social Sustainability means ensuring the well-being of current and future generations, by recognizing every person’s right to belong to and participate as a valued member of his or her community. In smart cities, platform should be laid such that it develops the environment around people by allowing them to connect more easily, interact more lively and cooperate each other. Also for a city to remain smart smarter individuals need to be developed. And therefore children should be given smart education using extensive use of technologies to have their overall growth. These children should be allowed to grow into smart individuals, becoming future leaders and policymakers.

In the present world some smart cities to be named are New York, Singapore, London, Barcelona and Tokyo. These cities are live examples and motivators for developing countries like India to have their own smart cities . In 2015 ,India launched Smart City Mission focusing on developing 100 cities. India is still in the race of becoming smart provided it recognizes its weakness and possible challenges that needs to be addressed. Overall,  smart cities are the next step towards progress. And every country should work accordingly to make their cities smarter.
